Plot Summary
The film is set in 1823, when a group of fur trappers led by Captain Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson) are attacked by a Native American tribe called the Arikara. Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), an experienced hunter and guide, saves the group from being wiped out by leading them to a nearby river. Along with his son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck), who is half-Pawnee, Glass joins Henry and a few other men on a boat to escape the Arikara.
While scouting ahead, Glass encounters a grizzly bear and is brutally mauled. He manages to kill the bear, but is severely wounded. Henry decides to leave Glass behind with three volunteers: John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), a greedy and ruthless trapper; Jim Bridger (Will Poulter), a young and naive adventurer; and Hawk. Henry promises to reward them for staying with Glass until he dies or recovers.
Fitzgerald, impatient and fearful of the Arikara, tries to kill Glass by suffocating him, but is stopped by Hawk. Fitzgerald then stabs Hawk to death and lies to Bridger that he saw the Arikara approaching. He convinces Bridger to abandon Glass and flee with him, taking Glass's rifle and other belongings. They leave Glass in a shallow grave, still alive.
Glass regains consciousness and crawls out of his grave. He begins a long and arduous journey across the harsh terrain, facing hunger, cold, pain, and danger from both animals and humans. He survives by eating raw fish and bison liver, cauterizing his wounds with gunpowder, and using a dead horse as a shelter. He also has visions of his deceased wife, who was killed by soldiers during a raid on his village.
Glass eventually reaches an abandoned fort where he finds Henry and his men. He confronts Fitzgerald, who has lied about what happened to Glass and Hawk. Henry believes Glass's story and orders Fitzgerald to return the stolen rifle and money. Fitzgerald escapes into the woods with the rifle, pursued by Glass.
Glass tracks down Fitzgerald near a river bank and engages him in a brutal fight. Glass gains the upper hand and is about to kill Fitzgerald when he sees a group of Arikara warriors on the other side of the river. He pushes Fitzgerald into the water and lets him float towards them. The Arikara chief kills Fitzgerald with an arrow as an act of revenge for his daughter Powaqa (Melaw Nakehk'o), whom Glass had helped rescue from some French trappers earlier.
Glass collapses on the river bank, exhausted and wounded. He looks into the camera and breathes heavily as the screen fades to black.
