Plot summary

The film is set in the near future, where Earth is suffering from a global crop blight that threatens to cause mass starvation. Cooper (McConaughey) is a former NASA pilot and engineer who now works as a farmer with his son Tom (Timothee Chalamet), daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy), and father-in-law Donald (John Lithgow). One day, Cooper and Murph discover a gravitational anomaly in their farmhouse that leads them to a secret NASA facility. There, they meet Professor Brand (Caine), an old colleague of Cooper's who reveals that NASA has been working on a plan to save humanity by finding a new habitable planet in another galaxy. Brand explains that a wormhole has mysteriously appeared near Saturn, which allows access to twelve potential planets located in a distant galaxy. He also reveals that he has been working on two plans: Plan A, which involves solving an equation that would allow humanity to harness gravity and launch massive space stations into orbit; and Plan B, which involves sending a colony of frozen human embryos to one of the planets to ensure the survival of the species.

Brand recruits Cooper to lead a team of astronauts on the Endurance spacecraft to explore the planets and find the most suitable one for colonization. The team consists of Brand's daughter Amelia (Hathaway), Romilly (David Gyasi), Doyle (Wes Bentley), and two robots, TARS (voiced by Bill Irwin) and CASE (voiced by Josh Stewart). Cooper agrees to join the mission, despite knowing that he might never see his children again due to the time dilation caused by the wormhole and the gravitational fields of the planets. He leaves behind a devastated Murph, who feels betrayed by his decision.

The Endurance enters the wormhole and arrives in the new galaxy. The team decides to visit three planets that have sent positive signals: Miller's planet, Mann's planet, and Edmunds' planet. These planets are named after the previous astronauts who were part of the Lazarus mission, a secret project that sent twelve individuals through the wormhole to scout for habitable worlds. However, each planet poses its own challenges and dangers. Miller's planet is located near a massive black hole named Gargantua, which causes severe time dilation: one hour on the planet equals seven years on Earth. The planet is also covered by shallow water and gigantic waves that destroy their landing craft and kill Doyle. Mann's planet is an icy wasteland where Dr. Mann (Matt Damon), the leader of the Lazarus mission, has been in cryosleep for years. He turns out to be a traitor who faked his data and tries to kill Cooper and Amelia to hijack their ship. He fails and dies in an explosion that damages the Endurance. Edmunds' planet is a rocky world where Dr. Edmunds (Casey Affleck), Amelia's lover, has died after landing.

Meanwhile, on Earth, time has passed much faster than in space. Murph (now played by Jessica Chastain) has grown up to become a scientist working with Brand at NASA. She discovers that Brand has died and that he had given up on Plan A long ago, knowing that his equation was unsolvable without more data from inside a black hole. She also realizes that her father had left her a coded message through the gravitational anomaly in her bedroom, telling her to stay. She deduces that the anomaly was created by an unknown intelligence that can manipulate gravity and time, and that they are trying to help humanity. She decides to continue working on the equation, hoping that her father is still alive.

Plot analysis

Interstellar is a film that combines hard science fiction with emotional drama. The film is heavily influenced by the works of physicist Kip Thorne, who served as a scientific consultant and executive producer for the film. The film incorporates many concepts from theoretical physics, such as wormholes, black holes, relativity, gravity, and the fifth dimension. The film also explores the philosophical and ethical implications of these concepts, such as the nature of time, the meaning of life, the role of love, and the fate of humanity.

One of the main themes of the film is survival. The film depicts a bleak vision of the future, where humanity is facing extinction due to environmental degradation and resource depletion. The film raises the question of whether humanity deserves to survive, and what sacrifices are necessary to ensure its survival. The film presents two contrasting views on this question: one represented by Professor Brand, who believes that humanity must abandon Earth and start anew on another planet; and the other represented by Murph, who believes that humanity must stay and fix its problems on Earth. The film also shows how different characters cope with the harsh realities of survival, such as Cooper, who risks his life and his relationship with his children to save humanity; Amelia, who clings to her love for Edmunds as a source of hope; Mann, who succumbs to his fear and selfishness; and Romilly, who finds solace in his curiosity and wonder.

Another theme of the film is sacrifice. The film portrays the various sacrifices that the characters make for the sake of humanity or their loved ones. For example, Cooper sacrifices his time and his chance to see his children grow up; Amelia sacrifices her chance to be with Edmunds; Murph sacrifices her childhood and her happiness; Brand sacrifices his honesty and his reputation; and Edmunds sacrifices his life. The film also explores the moral dilemmas that arise from these sacrifices, such as whether it is justified to lie or kill for a greater good, or whether it is worth to give up one's personal happiness for a collective one.

A third theme of the film is love. The film suggests that love is a powerful force that transcends time and space, and that it can guide human actions and decisions. The film shows how love motivates the characters to do extraordinary things, such as Cooper's love for Murph that drives him to complete his mission and return to her; Amelia's love for Edmunds that leads her to choose his planet over Mann's; Murph's love for Cooper that inspires her to solve the equation and save humanity; and Cooper's love for Amelia that compels him to rescue her from Edmunds' planet. The film also implies that love is a form of communication that can bridge the gap between dimensions, as evidenced by Cooper's ability to send messages to Murph through the gravitational anomaly in her bedroom.

Interstellar is a complex and ambitious film that challenges the audience to think about the scientific, philosophical, and emotional aspects of human existence. The film offers a thrilling and moving story of human exploration, discovery, and survival in the face of cosmic adversity. The film also raises important questions about the future of humanity and its place in the universe.
